It’s almost counter-intuitive how easily we forget about the middle-child of the home (when it comes to spaces): the porch. Counter-intuitive how you ask? Because it’s literally one of the first things we come across when entering someone’s house. Whoever said, “don’t judge a book by its cover,” did not know porches….but luckily we do!

Here’s how to perfect the art of the porch and get the look, too!

High Style in High Contrast

Colors. The defining element in our lives that stimulate our senses like no other. These hues, when rich,  also help balance a space and make it both cheerful and give it a “larger-than-life” personality, no matter the square footage. Use colors that juxtapose heavily against one another to create breaks (think of stations) between all your decorative pieces. One by one, they may seem off, but together they create a picture worth a thousand words!

Let Nature Take Its Course

Just like in last week’s post about wicker furnishings, there’s a decor movement going about regarding natural elements. Offer your space a breath of fresh air with furnishings that channel mother earth.

Effortlessly Chic: Details, Details, Details

Contrary to a more energetic palette (using high contrasts hues) keeping a theme consistent can offer a more calming approach to the porch. Going the more subtle direction does not mean uncreative — the fun is in the details. Go rustic with more wooden materials, mixed with brass, and other metals that offer chic pops of fun! Still not convinced? A little wall-art goes a long way too!

Domino Effect: Black and White

Black – a designer’s least favorite – is making a comeback. The ability for it to strike at you with its bold persona, when used in smaller scales, such as accessories, they add a twist to more traditional spaces. Take the plunge this season with the statement that’s here to stay!

Sun’s Out, Lights Out!

The porch is the space in your house that will ALWAYS get the best light: natural. Assuming that you live in a part of the world where sunlight is plentiful – and for those that aren’t –  or perhaps want to have synthetic light after the sun is down, lighting can be both functional and decorative. Choose statement pieces this season (traditional or modern) to up your porch life!
