Trends and elegance are sometimes mutually exclusive ideas. While I love incorporating “of the moment” pieces into my designs, they also must have longevity. After all, you don’t want to replace everything in your living room when trends change!
There are a few “trends” that are in right now and will also stand the test of time. I hesitate to call them trends, actually. They’re almost guidelines to update your style. These interior design trend suggestions will be popular in 2020 and beyond to ensure your home is both current and tasteful.
A note on trends: don’t feel like you need to change your home if you love a piece or particular type of style that’s represented in it! These are just suggestions. Some trends I love, others I don’t. I assume you are the same way. Interior design trends (and other trends, too) are cyclical and will eventually come back into fashion. Keep what you love, disregard the rest!
Dramatic Monochrome
Gone are the days of gray on gray on gray. With the Color of the Year, Classic Blue, comes a focus on bold colors. Richly hued colors add plenty of drama and depth to a room. Layer wall paint, upholstery, furniture choices, and accents in the same color family to achieve an elegant and intentional space that’s inviting and full of personality!

Grandmillenial
Grandmillenial style is very popular right now, thanks to a viral House Beautiful article. Millenials are bringing back the style of their grandparents – oh no!! Think ruffles & trim, chintz upholstered furniture, wallpaper & drapes. And, don’t leave out those needlepoint pillows! It’s an interesting mix of old and new. To achieve the look of this interior design trend, select a blend of traditional elements with and a modern twist. Use vintage pieces and natural synthetic materials like wicker. Add some floral prints, bright colors and you’re done!
Dark Doors
I love painting interior doors dark almost as much as I love mango La Croix! It brings a sophisticated yet unexpected focal point to the room and balances larger pieces in the space. Painting a door a rich shade will also bring boldness to a smaller room. You can take this interior design trend one step further and paint the trim in a dark hue as well.

Texture and Personality
An interior design trend that will never go out of style is “Whatever makes you happy.” That is to say: bring your personality into the room! Accessorize with pieces that have a special meaning and a story behind them. Decorate your room with books, throws, artwork, and more that make you feel at ease in your home. Bring in real plants, texture, and layers for interest. It’s okay if it’s slightly imperfect; your home isn’t a museum after all!
Bonus: if you showcase unique pieces as a style element, guests will ask questions about that great item and not focus on your husband’s belt not matching his shoes.

Quality
Right now, many folks are shifting from fast-fashion and -trends to locally-produced, sustainable, and quality pieces. Filling your home with cheap (read: tasteless) pieces you think you need doesn’t come off as stylish. There is style in simplicity.
Rather than throwing money at commercially-mass-produced goods, buy the highest-quality pieces you can afford and that you love. Not only will your space be less cluttered, you’ll achieve a style that is uniquely your own because you’ve intentionally selected and cherish each piece in your home!
